art lessons online: art journaling for beginners
Do you dream of sketching or journaling on your travels, in the bush or at a cafe?
Are you unsure of where to start or how to draw the scene before you?
Well my friend, I have something special for you: a Daily Drawing program of art lessons online!
The program is 30 days of quick, 15 minute drawing exercises designed to help you develop all the skills you need to draw from life (not printed references). The end goal is that you can get out amongst nature, in the bush or somewhere on your travels, sit down with a sketch book and draw exactly what you see. Without any frustration, without any of the “I’m not sure how to do this” but will all the confidence to draw exactly what you see and enjoy it!
What’s covered in the adult drawing classes:
Day 1 - 9 is all about training our eye to measure and draw accurately. Accurate line and shape is the number 1 key to starting a drawing off successfully, so we’re spending a bit of time here. We’ll start off with some blind contour exercises, then focus on line work drawings before graduating to drawing from photo references.
Days 10 - 13 are about tone. I’ll share some great exercises on how to train your eye to judge tones correctly. We’re rarely ever drawing something with a pure white background, yet we’re almost always drawing onto a white piece of paper. So I’ll show you how to avoid tonal illusions that commonly occur when we’re trying to determine tones against a white page.
Days 14 - 20 introduces drawing from life inside the home. We’ll make a viewfinder and use this and other techniques to draw objects in the right place at the right size. We’ll be focusing on indoor scenes here: fruit, cups and bowls, chairs and tables, anything you have at home is drawable!
Days 21 - 24 is all about perspective: drawing in 1 point perspective, drawing in 2 point perspective and how to draw round objects in perspective. This will help you gain a greater understanding of drawing 3D objects from life, particularly street scenes, indoor subjects and man-made objects.
Days 25 - 30 is when we bring our sketchbook outdoors. We want to apply the skills we’ve learnt to simplify complex subjects, accurately draw details AND start to draw the experience. It’s a little more like journaling and drawing the feel, the sounds and smells of the landscape. I haven’t yet taught this type of drawing before in my classes and I’m really excited to share it with you.
What you’ll need for the art lessons online?
You’ll need your usual drawing materials - eraser, sharpener, 2B and 6B pencil, A4 paper and ruler. In week 2 you’ll also need a ball point pen and in week 3 you’ll need some thicker paper/card (the back of a drawing pad will do)
How to access the art lessons online:
You’ll find the course in my online Artory Academy. It’s just $40 a month (you can cancel anytime, so if you just want to do the 30 days of Daily Drawing program, simply cancel your subscription on day 30).
Once you’ve joined the Artory Academy, simply login on computer or device and head to the “drawing classroom” and “Daily Drawing Practice” (you’ll also have access to my watercolour courses and “fundamentals drawing course”).
The course launched December 1st, so I’m still actively uploading new exercises every day and am available to answer your questions, so now is a great time to join.
If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to ask.
I’d also love if you can share it with anyone you know who might be interested. I appreciate so much all the help I can get spreading the word. I’m a one-lady team over here, artist/teacher/admin/website designer so any shares, mentions or referrals are appreciated immensely. Thank you!
