 SESSION 1: INTRO TO WATERCOLOUR

Whether you’re new to watercolour or have been using it for many years, session 1 is all about clarifying exactly what watercolour is and how it works. I made this video a few years ago to help my new watercolour students learn my system for painting with watercolour but its proven timeless even for my advanced students (many have said it was one of the most helpful watercolour videos they have seen!)

In this class you will learn:

  1. Watercolour fundamentals

  2. What materials to use (and what not to use!)

  3. The 2 main techniques for watercolour: wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry.

  4. The “Smerdon System of watercolour” (my unique techniques and terms including: glazing, moozsch moozsch-ing, sloshing and feathering).

Materials:

You’ll find the 2 exercises for the session in your work book. Don’t worry if you don’t have the exact same colours, or if you have pan watercolours (dried) instead of tubes, just use what you have. If you can’t find good quality but budget-friendly watercolour paper or brushes, you can order some from me. But you’ll need to head to your local art store for the paints (hooray for supporting local).

Once you’ve got the introductory video and exercises under your belt (or should I say apron), it’s time for the main event: your whale painting! It’s a 30 minute watercolour class that takes you right through every stage of the artwork: from drawing to finished painting, ready to frame and hang on a wall.
