WHAT TO BRING TO

GOUACHE PAINTING CLASSES

Most of these materials are available from The Artists Apothecary (where class is held). It opens at 9:30am so you can grab whatever you need before class (but it’s best to purchase these in advance in case the store is sold out on the day).

  • 2B & 6B pencil, sharpener, kneadable eraser

  • flat plastic tray or board for a palette (a plastic chopping board or large flat-ish tuppaware container is perfect). This will get wet so plastic is best.

  • bulldog clip (for clamping the baking paper onto you board)

  • paper (any brand watercolour paper is great, or non-watercolour paper is fine too as long as it’s on the thicker side, around 200gsm)

  • brushes - flat/filbert brushes with softer bristles.

Painters tape/masking tape:

Painters tape is hard to find! But The Artists Apothecary has it. Or normal making tape will do as well.

Gouache tube paints:

You can buy individual tubes of gouache paint in these colours (or similar):

❤️ Quinacridone Magenta PR122

💙 Ultramarine Blue OR Winsor Blue red shade PB15 (also known as Phthalo Blue red shade)

💛 Cadmium Lemon PY35 (Winsor Lemon, Winsor Yellow, Aureolin are fine too)

♡ Titanium White

🖤 black

Alternatively, we also like these packs available from the Artists Apothecary (around $50 - $60). Not this pack lists “ultramarine deep” as the blue.

The Artist’s Apothecary also sells a similar Holbein set with “primary cyan” as the blue. If using this set, Liv recommends adding an Ultramarine Blue (as the ‘primary cyan’ is quite light and this additional colour will help you get nice dark blue (without needing to add black, thus making the blue a bit dull)

Be aware there is “gouache” and “acrylic gouache”. Both of these are fine but some students haven’t liked the “acrylic gouache” sets as much as they dry a bit faster and aren’t as blend-able, though the difference is fairly small.
