WHAT TO BRING TO
WATERCOLOUR PAINTING CLASSES
art materials are available from The Artists Apothecary, Murwillumbah.
2B & 6B pencil, sharpener, kneadable eraser, ruler, scissors
Masking tape
a roll of toilet paper or paper towel
Watercolour paper - 5 A4 size sheets of Arches 300gsm cold press paper OR Cartarello watercolour paper (this is a much cheaper paper but on par with Arches quality! It is available from The Artists Apothecary). Cut it into 6x smaller sheets (roughly 21 x 28cm) as indicated below. You’ll have 2 narrow pieces left over at the end. (please don’t bring other brands of watercolour paper - I explain why in my article here). Arches and Cartarello also allows us the opportunity to use masking fluid, which doesn’t work on cheaper papers with inferior sizing.
Watercolour brushes - a large and small round, natural hair brush (I like unbranded goat hair ones from The Artists Apothecary and I like one with about 1cm diameter bristles and one about 0.5cm diameter bristles. You’ll also need a rigger brush (this can be synthetic hair).
Large Plastic watercolour palette (there’s a photo of the palette I use here, try to find one with deep wells. I got mine from the Art Shed)
Watercolour tube paints - We will be using a primary palette (one blue, one yellow, one red) so use any blue, yellow and red you have! Don’t feel the need to go out and buy new colours BUT if you want the same colours as me, I’ve chosen the following high Chroma colours from Winsor & Newton:
❤️ Quinacridone Magenta PR122 (alizarin crimson is nice too or cadmium red)
💙 Winsor Blue PB15 (Phthalo Blue (red or green shade is fine) or Ultramarine Blue (french ultramarine is the same colour just different granulation)
💛 Cadmium Lemon PY35 (Winsor Lemon, Winsor Yellow, Aureolin or any bright yellow colour is fine too)
♡ GOUACHE - Titanium White
💛 For Janet Hallidays classes - please also bring Burnt Sienna
🎨 Optional:
💙 Cobalt turquoise light (for classes with Anne Smerdon)
💗 Opera Rose PR122 (or Permanent Rose PV19) for classes with Anne Smerdon
